Description of Shorinji Kempo

MALP

While it is important to train the body, it is also important to train the mind. While some prefers one over the other, Shorinji Kempo believes that the body and the mind are one and training both can not be done separately or with one being more favored than the other. Shorinji Kempo, which is more of a discipline than it is "budo", was established by Doshin Sho, a Japanese who spent most of his time pondering on how to help the Japanese nation with its ongoing crisis. While he was in China, he was able to learn several techniques of Chinese martial arts under Giwamon-ken experts namely Master Chen and Master Wen. He was also able to visit the Shaolin Temple in Hana Province where he inherited Giwamon-ken and became the 21st master.

When he returned to Japan after World War II, he sought to teach Buddhist philosophy aiming to help the Japanese people who were then demoralized by the war. However, because this brought nothing new to the table, people were not convinced and did not bother with it. Doshin Sho then established Shorinji Kenpo where "Shorinji" is the literal reading of the Chinese word for "Shaolin Temple". It presented to have three benefits which are self-defense and training, mental training and health improvement. Shorinji Kempo soughts to promote self-improvement, firm courage, compassion and harmony as one step towards world peace.
