Description of xingyiquan

MALP

Xingyiquan approximately means "Form/Intention Boxing" and is a Wudang-style Chinese martial art. It focuses on utilizing inner strength or "chi/qi" in order to achieve bursts of power to overwhelm the opponent and simultaneously attacking and defending. The main idea is to be able to get to the opponent and get them with one powerful burst or hit. In order to achieve this, one must be able to focus one's chi/qi to help him coordinate body movements.

While forms are different for every school, all of them have the same sequences that are based on studying the movements and fighting behaviors of animals. Each animal style has various other forms under it, all of which are influenced by the nature of that animal. These animals are as follows:

  • Bear
  • Eagle
  • Snake
  • Tiger
  • Dragon
  • Chicken
  • Horse
  • Swallow
  • Goshawk
  • Monkey
  • Crane
  • Crocodile
  • Tai
  • Turtle
  • Ostrich

Legend has it that Xingyiquan or Xingyi was created General Yue Fei of the Song Dynasty. There are also written records of Xingyi being developed by Ma Xueli from the Henan Province and Dai Long Bang of Shanxi provice. However, the exact origin of Xingyi is still undetermined. However, its linear nature hints that it has military and spear technique influences. Its techniques are hard and angular, unlikemost martial arts that make use of qi.
